More Than 130,000 of Andy Warhol’s Photographs are Now Free Online

In addition to all of Andy Warhol’s iconic pieces of art, he was also a renowned photographer never without his camera. From discos and flea markets, to dinner parties and wrestling matches, Warhol snapped hundreds of thousands of pictures between 1976 and 1987. Stanford just made them available for free online. As they describe it in the Andy Warhol Photography Archive, “Drawing on a trove of over 3,600 contact sheets featuring 130,000 photographic exposures acquired in 2014 from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc., the images document Warhol’s daily life. The collection features candid portraits of celebrities and artists of the era including: Jean-Michel Basquiat, Truman Capote, Jimmy Carter, Martha Graham, Halston, Keith Haring, Debbie Harry, Bianca Jagger, Grace Jones, Jackie Kennedy, Liza Minnelli, Dolly Parton, Robert Rauschenberg, Elizabeth Taylor, Diane Von Furstenberg, and more.” The entire collection of contact sheets and images is divided into 20 different subjects ranging from parties and travel to actors and musicians.
